What Is the Difference Between a Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest?

!±8± What Is the Difference Between a Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest?

Although you may have heard the terms cardiac arrest and heart attack used interchangeably, they are two distinct situations with different symptoms and effects. The term heart attack refers to the muscle tissue in the heart being damaged by lack of blood flow. When a person experiences a heart attack, it is usually due to a blood clot in one of their heart's major arteries which drastically limits or stops the blood flow to the heart. Once the flow of blood is cut off from the muscle tissue in the heart, it will begin to die and cause severe chest pains.

Symptoms of Heart Attack:
Chest Pain Pressure, heaviness or tightness in the chest Pain or pressure in the neck or jaw Shortness of Breath Sweating Pain or throbbing at or in-between the shoulder blades

The condition cardiac arrest refers to when the heart actually fails to pump blood to the bodies vital organs. In the case of cardiac arrest, the heart will either stop pumping blood adroitly, or vary in speed which would render it useless. A person experiencing cardiac arrest can die within four minutes if not immediately receiving efficient medical attention. There are three main causes for sudden cardiac arrest are ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and asystole.

Ventricular Fibrillation

Ventricular fibrillation occurs when the heart muscle begins to quiver erratically, leading to a loss of blood flow through the heart.

Treatments for ventricular fibrillation include CPR and defibrillation

Ventricular Tachycardia

Ventricular tachycardia is a problem in which a recurring loop in the conduction pathways of the heart gives way to rapid contractions of the ventricles.

As a result, the victims blood pressure and overall blood flow will be greatly reduced due to the inability of the ventricles to fully fill with blood between contractions

Asystole

Asystole is the absolute standstill of the heart muscle

It is very important to recognize the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest. In the instance of a heart attack, immediately seek medical attention by calling 9-1-1 or getting to your local ER center. In a cardiac arrest situation, immediate action has to be taken to save the person's life in the form of an automatic external defibrillator (AED). The AED unit is a small, portable, and civilian friendly (easy to use) defibrillator that can be used in order to jump start a persons heart long enough for medical attention to arrive.

When a cardiac arrest occurs, the fact is that only half of the victims will need a shock. The other half requires CPR resuscitation. You deserve an automated external defibrillator (AED) that helps you all the time. And, only one AED can actually see when you are doing CPR resuscitation and help you do it well. You need more than just commands, without assistance. Philips EMT supplies is a life saving device that is used to deliver an electric shock to the victim of sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest can victimize a person of any age group or fitness level. During cardiac arrest, the victim's heart starts to quiver and beat rapidly; it also ceases to pump blood effectively. Defibrillation helps in restoring the heart beat to a normal rate. As per American Heart Association (AHA) around 350,000 Americans suffer from sudden cardiac arrest and with timely help it is possible to save around 20,000 to 100,000 of them.

Early defibrillation is the key to saving a victim.

o The best thing about defibrillators is that these are user friendly devices and can be used by a lay person with minimum training. The standard visual and voice prompt feature in Heartstart AEDs makes it perfectly easy for the rescuer to use the device. Human life is precious and you can help to save a victim of sudden cardiac arrest by using AED life saving devices.

o It is crucial that the victim gets timely help because a delay can cause him to lose his life. AEDs are portable, compact, and easy to use; anyone can use a defibrillator in case of an emergency with some basic training. You can learn to use an laerdal on the AED trainers, such as Laedral AED Trainer 2, Philips HeartStart FRx Trainer, ZOLL AED Plus® Trainer2, and Defibtech Stand Alone Training AED. These trainers are perfect to train lay persons and health care professionals to use AED devices in an emergency medical situation.

o Methods for AED Maintenance

o There are many ways to maintain the CPR mouth Kits in proper working condition. AED checklists play a key role in AED maintenance. The inspection data should be kept for future records.

o Daily Maintenance AED Checklist: The AED should be cleaned daily to keep it free from dust, dirt and contamination. The AED equipment should be placed in place where is easily visible and accessible. The daily checklist includes parameters like verifying the status indicator, battery installation, visual audible service alarm, and exterior components and sockets for cracks. The daily inspection must be done by trained person who can thoroughly check the readiness of the equipment.

o Monthly Maintenance AED Checklist: A monthly inspection should be carried out by the AED Coordinator to check the functionality of the equipment. The auxiliary supplies like AED pads, pocket mask, examination gloves, razors, absorbent gauze, PC cards, and batteries must be checked every 30 days. The expiration date on the package should be verified to ensure there is no obsolete equipment or supplies in the stock. One of the most important factors in monthly AED checklist is to carry out a battery insertion test (BIT) insertion test before repackaging the AED equipment after use.

o American Red Cross has designed CPR and AED programs to instill confidence and spread awareness amongst the general population. Apart from the programs for professional rescuers, there are programs which will prepare you for delivering CPR or defibrillation if anybody is victimized by sudden cardiac arrest in your family or community. There are courses which prepare you to help SCA victims in your workplace and schools.

o AED practice drills should include staff members in case of organizations and students and teachers in case of school and other people who can help the victim. The drills involve simulating the emergency situation of a cardiac arrest victim using manikins. Various scenarios must be used for practice drills for effective training. After the drill performance of the rescuer must be analyzed to suggest improvement areas. The trainees of AED emergency response drills are taught step by step for convenience and ease.
